Alien (1979) not only pushes boundaries in terms of visual design, but also in subliminal messages hidden within the film that the audience will have to sit a decipher; these include woman empowerment, challenging misogynistic views and the vulnerable qualities that reside in men. I think you need to finalise how you are going to resolve you art direction in regards to texturing and lighting. The shapes that you are using are ripe for an animated world and would benefit from a stylised graphical treatment, think "A Cat In A Hat", or "Horton Hears a Who!"
I will look finalize the art direction within the provided concept using the suggested design links you have mentioned and look to design textures that will emphasis the 3D models structural details to form a cohesive final matte painting.
