Reviewing 3D Pre-Vis from Premise.

Image
Progressing on with the Minor project and reviewing my Premise work, I've gone back to my previous 3D Pre-Vis I created in Premise and have begun to better plan out the camera flow and the set layouts I intend to use in my final film. This included going back and considering how the cameras (in this case a drone) will move around the scene and capture the story I'm trying to create. In my initial Pre-Vis in Premise I moved the camera around the scenes to illustrate the direction in which I wanted my short to be filmed, however looking back on my pervious work I found the camera movements to be too erratic and fast paced in some places; creating more of a fly through the set rather than tell a story.      To help reduce the fast paced camera movements I plan to work in a second camera, as well as have at least one drone visible within the scenes to help direct the camera movement/audiences attention within the scene and to help add a bit more interest for the viewer. Renewed Set Concepts.

Image
After reviewing my Premise work, I found my concept drawings lacking. So to help start off the Minor Project I began by rounding of the set concepts to help show a general idea of the type of scenes/sets I plan to use in the final shots when filming.  Here I started off by finishing the Lab Deck Desk concept by filling in the colour to help round off that concept. Lab Deck Continuation: Lab Deck Desk Outline from Premise Coloured Lab Desk - Back Lighting; Lighting based behind the Pin board Coloured Lab Desk 2 - Light changed to have slight light rays casting onto the desk. From there I then moved onto drawing out the rest of my concepts to help give me those working visuals to then refer back to when in Maya. This consisted of Harret Sets Main St, the Lab Deck's Shattered window and finally the Generator Hallway. Maya Refresher #3: AOVs.

Image
AOVs – known as Arbitrary Output Variables - are essentially render passes/ render layers. With AOVs we can ‘break’ a flat image up into layers and then when compositing we can then either choose to take bits out or keep bits in. AOVs are typically saved out as EXR files (32-bit files) due to all the raw Data they contain within the layers.  To set up AOVs simply go to the render settings and open the AOVs tab. Below you will see two columns one side full of available AOVs and one side with Active AOVs, choose which AOVs you wish to use from the available column, select it and the click the two arrows >> to move it over to the active column. This will then remove those selected from the available column. You will then be able to see the active AOVs when you open the rendering viewport. Render Setup:  Creating override materials that only show in the render view. 1 Base: Set up Skydome and directional light. Ambient Occlusion: Material override from Render Setup Wireframe: Mater

Maya Refresher #2: Fog and Atmospherics.

Image
In Maya there are two types of fog that can be used within a scene the first being Ai fog (Legacy), which is the older version of creating fog in a scene, this fog uses a directional light and doesn’t tend to interact the lights in scene and usually tends to white wash the scene as it simulates a very dense fog. The second is by using Atmosphere Volumetrics’ called AiAtmosphereVolume which is the newer version to the legacy fog system. This fog does interact with the lights in the scene and therefore creates more accurate/ detailed fog and interest within the scene. To get fog set up within the scene open the render settings and then go to the Arnold menu and down to environment tab. Click the checker next to atmosphere and select the fog you wish to use.  AiFog (Legacy). Added directional light to scene. Added AiFog Changed colour of fog. AiFog Composite Outcome. AiAtomosphereVolume. Added in spot light - Alternatively I could have added in a area or a point light as well to ac

Establishing the Town Within my World: Name the Town and Shop Branding.

Image
To help add a bit of background to the world I'm creating I looked at giving my decaying town a name and a loose idea of what it could have been like. Below shows the process I went through to construct my town name and explains some of my ideas behind the feel of the town. Maya Refresher #1: Lighting Practice.

Image
Lighting Tips: > When it comes to lighting the scenes in Maya, come prepared with a mood board of reference images of lighting that you want to see in your scene. With this base of reference you can then start to work out the type of lighting that you will use when in Maya. > Think about the overall light going into the scene (sky dome as the main light and any extra lights like directional/ area lights). > Think about the colour of the shadows. > Think about the main lights (depending on the time of day). > Think about the type of atmosphere within the scene and how that will affect the your lighting choice (eg fog and atmospherics). > Key Note: The more lights you add the longer the rendering time will be, plus any numbers added in the render settings to detract any dark spotting in shadow areas. Mid-day Shot: Used Skydome Light with a Ramp to light scene, Directional Light to help brighten scene and create those shadows & Area Light to help replicate the

Introduction to Minor: Outcome Proposal.

To kick off Year 3, our first briefing this year was the introduction to the Minor project. For this project we had two options; either start fresh with a new idea that would then be carried over into the Major project to come later on in the year, or carry on using the base idea from our Premise project and see it through to the end of the Major project. Here I choose to continue on from Premise because I felt that that most of the foundations were already in place to then build upon and expand out for when it comes to creating in Maya. As part of the Minor Outcome Proposal, it required me to go back and reflect on/review my Premise work from last year. This included looking at any work that still needs to be done to help round off that section of work, as well as looking at making any improvements that need to be done in either the design areas or with the 3D Pre-Vis; which will need a refined updated version to move forward with. Keeping this in mind I'm aiming to review and ref
