Collaboration Briefing.

With starting a new year at the university comes with a load of new and exciting brief's and projects. To start off this year the class was spilt up for the new incoming project: Collaboration. which is a group work project I and a few others will be working on.

Within this project there are 3 sub-projects to consider, these being: 

Project 1: Collaborating - Goal: Successfully collaborate with other group members.

Project 2: Animated Short. - Goal: As a group, to create a comedic 2 minute animated short that communicates its ideas clearly. 

Project 3: Lecture Program & Film Reviews - Goal: To learn film analysis is support of filmmaking. 

Each project comes with its own hurdles, these being Project 1 to come up with a studio name and brand identity, as well as allocating job roles and working towards communicating with the peers in the group. Project 2: Working on the practical side of things, this being creating the comedy skits based on our topics that were chosen at random (ours being The Worlds Worst...) combined together to create a 2 minute animated short. Finally Project 3 that will consist of a film lecture series that will then be reviewed and posted to the blog.

I am looking forward to the endless possibilities and decisions to be made within the group and the potential for our finalized outcome.

For todays lecture we looked at structural theories within films. This came looking at the 3 act structure - linear narrative structure - proposed by Syd Field who modernized and wrote about Aristotle's initial theory of narrative structure who stated that  “A whole is what has a beginning and middle and end” Poetics 335BC. Field  also stated that the 3 act structure   doesn't   necessarily  need to follow Aristotle's  proposed time  schedule and that the middle act (act 2) is usually twice as long as act 1 and 3. Alien (1979) - Film Review.

Directed by Sir Ridley Scott and written from the minds of Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett; Alien (1979) is a film full of jump scares, high suspense and restless curiosity, as stated by Roger Ebert “At its most fundamental level, "Alien" is a movie about things that can jump out of the dark and kill you.” further emphasising the menacing and hostile nature of the foreign organism. Alien (1979) not only pushes boundaries in terms of visual design, but also in subliminal messages hidden within the film that the audience will have to sit a decipher; these include woman empowerment, challenging misogynistic views and the vulnerable qualities that reside in men.
